Tyler Brûlé is a Canadian journalist, magazine publisher and branding expert who uses this series to explore how the business of buying and selling, of branding and re-branding reveals the true culture of six very different countries. Filmed in Japan, Sweden, Russia, Italy, USA and Libya, Brûlé unpicks the culture of retail, the way people shop, the places they shop and what that tells us about their culture and societies. Part one begins by looking at the retail revolution that has occurred in Russia. Whilst in Russia, Brule interviews the editor of Russian Vogue, a Russian oligarch's widow, the CEO of Moscow's top shop GUM and many others. Many of the Russians that Tyler interviews evoke the glamour days of the Tsars, but they also represent the widening gap that exists between the rich and the poor. With many Russians regarding their future with a pessimistic attitude, an atmosphere of hedonism has arisen. Throughout the series, Tyler asks; does the way we shop define the way we live? Brûlé seeks to answer that question by exploring the cultures of six very different countries through their attitudes to retail.
